The British composer is among those chosen to receive a prestigious Kennedy Center Honor this year at a special ceremony on December 2 at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, hosted by Condoleezza Rice.

He will also be received by President Bush at The White House the following day before attending a special gala performance at the Kennedy Center’s Opera House.

The Kennedy Center Honors are presented annually and are considered to be among the most distinguished cultural accolades in the US.

Past recipients include Paul Newman, Tony Bennett, Tina Turner, Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson and Julie Andrews.

Lloyd Webber said: “I’m very flattered to have been asked to join the enormously impressive list of people the Kennedy Center has honoured over the years.”
