Liberty, Britain’s biggest festival of disability arts, took place in Trafalgar Square over the weekend, showcasing work by deaf and disabled artists, musicians, dancers and performers.
Organised by the Mayor of London, the one-day event has been running for four years and this year received funding from Arts Council England for the first time.
The line-up included premieres of two new street art commissions by leading disabled performers: Priscilla Queen of the Deaf World by the Alexandras, directed by Graeae Theatre’s Jenny Sealey, and Elevation by Caroline Bowditch, a new dance piece inspired by the Alison Lapper statue on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square.
The festival also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the London Disability Arts Forum, the organisation that supports disabled artists in the capital.
