Lee Evans is to star in new ITV1 drama The History of Mr Polly, which follows a unhappy man who after a failed suicide bid decides to try and turn his life around.

Set in Kent in 1910, Alfred Polly (Lee Evans) is the owner of a bankrupt Gentleman’s Outfitters and trapped in a joyless marriage to wife Miriam, played by Shameless and Virgin Queen star Anne-Marie Duff. Unhappy with his life he attempts to end it but fails, and so decides to take it as a sign to change his life.

Executive producer Michele Buck said: “The History of Mr Polly is a beautiful tale about following your dreams and how you can alter the course of your life if you are brave enough to make the changes.”

Based on a book by HG Wells, the 120-minute drama has adapted for television by Charles II: The Power and the Passion writer Adrian Hodges. It will broadcast on the network later this year.
