Geraldine McEwan returns as the famous spinster sleuth Miss Marple in the show, the first of four new films for ITV1. Julie Graham, Paul Nicholls, Greg Wise and Eileen Atkins also appear in the drama, which has been adapted by Kevin Elyot from the original novel.

The other three films have yet to be announced but the franchise has always proved popular with audiences and will provide the network with something of a ratings banker at a time when its audience share is dwindling.

Christie remains the most popular novelist in history, with over two billion of her books sold to date in over 100 languages and many hugely popular TV and film adaptations. LWT began broadcasting Agatha Christie’s Poirot in 1989 and the BBC was previously the producer of the Miss Marple dramas.
