Wood is moving to Hawaii, where her actor husband Henry Ian Cusick is appearing in the US TV series Lost as island inhabitant Desmond.

Making the announcement, Wood said: “Polka is in a very strong position with an excellent team and I know that it will attract excellent candidates for the artistic director post.

“This inspiring company will continue to be a pioneer of the best theatre for children and be the most welcoming venue for children inspiring and engaging them in the performing arts.”

During Wood’s time at the venue, Polka has extended its age range by developing work for under-fives and for teenagers, as well as creating the new writing for children programme, Playgrounding.

It has also collaborated with leading companies such as Theatre-rites, York Theatre Royal, Tamasha and Company of Angels.
