Childrens’ TV voice actor Hawkins dies

Peter Hawkins, the voice of Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men, Captain Pugwash and the Daleks during a career that spanned 45 years, has died aged 82.

Hawkins worked on many children’s television programmes, including Rainbow and SuperTed. He also created the famous voices of the Daleks and the Cybermen for Doctor Who and featured in the 1978 radio production of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

He worked alongside many of Britain’s most famous television personalities including Peter Sellers, Dave Allen, Ronnie Barker and Morecambe and Wise.

Hawkins, who retired in 1990, had been ill for some time and died on July 8. A full obituary will appear in a future issue of The Stage.
