The long-running show will come to an end with its 2,204th episode on July 30 when 79-year-old Savile will appear alongside other former presenters including Tony Blackburn, Mike Read and Pat Sharp. “I did the first one, and I’ll do the last,” Savile told producers.

According to a spokesman, the details of the format for the final show and even which bands will appear, have yet to be decided. Despite the end of Top of the Pops, TOTP2 on BBC2 will continue, as will the magazine and website.
