The Vortex, which launched Coward on to the London stage in 1924, is a savage portrayal of the darker side of the cocktail scene of the legendary roaring twenties, observed through the relationship of musician Nicky Lancaster and his mother Florence.

Young will be playing the lead role of Lancaster in the show, which is to be directed by Jo Combes, who previously worked on Knives in Hens, Electra and Pomegranate.

Combes said: “Will did a stunning audition and I am really excited about what he will bring to the character and the production. We are delighted that he has chosen to make his stage debut in the Royal Exchange’s 30th anniversary season.”

The show will run from the January 17 to March 10, 2007.
