Terrestrial broadcasters and television companies would lose more than £140 million - almost 4% of their total revenue - if there was a ban on junk food advertising, media regulator Ofcom has revealed.
GMTV would be hardest hit with a ban risking 6.7% of its total revenue, while ITV stands to lose 4.2%, Channel 4 at 3.4%, while Five could drop 3.1%. Children’s channels such as Toonami, Boomerang and Nicktoons would also suffer heavily with a £4.4 million loss - 3.7% of total revenue.
Ofcom released the figures to show the impact of a total ban as part of its public consultation on the future of advertising regulations in the UK. Many health campaingers are lobbying hard for more stringent rules governing what adverts can be broadcast, as part of a bid to tackle the increase in childhood obesity.
