Rod Hull’s son is bringing back Emu back to television, with a new 26-episode comedy series for CITV.
Each show, which will be made Endemol-owned independent production house Initial, will last 15 minutes and be fronted by Toby Hull.
Executive producer Christopher Pilkington said: “Having worked with Rod Hull in the past it is a particular thrill and pleasure to be reacquainted with the extraordinary Emu. I am delighted to be working with Toby and bringing the Emu to a brand new audience. Chatshow hosts be warned - the beak is back.”
The new programme is aimed at six to 11 year olds and will follow Hull and Emu in their new flat and their friendship with two children called Charlie and Dani.
In their heydey Rod Hull and Emu drew in primetime audiences in excess of 11 million, while Toby Hull and Emu previously appeared together in two pantomimes.
Estelle Hughes, CITV editor, said: Emu and Toby are a hugely entertaining double act, and I certainly will never forget that beak coming towards me. Audiences love home-grown comedies so this was a great opportunity for us to bring back one of the funniest and favourite CITV characters for a new generation.”
Broadcasters are increasingly capitalising on the appeal of nostalgia television, Five’s children’s strand Milkshake! already broadcasts Noddy and later this year will air an updated version of Rupert the Bear. Meanwhile on primetime, talent shows such as The X Factor have proved hugely popular with audiences and are becoming increasingly important to schedules. In the next few months, variety will also be returning to screens.
