Hackney’s Arcola Theatre is to become a regularly funded organisation, receiving £97,500 a year from 2007/08, Arts Council England has announced.
The venue, a former textile factory, was praised by ACE officials for its work with the local community and its role in helping to regenerate the area.
Sian Alexander, ACE, London, head of theatre, said: “The Arcola has grown into one of London’s most vibrant studio theatres - all thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit and artistic vision of Mehmet Ergen and his team.
“It is a great example of the kind of vision and approach that we are seeking to encourage.”
Since it was founded five years ago, the Arcola has staged work by writers and directors including Dominic Dromgoole, Max Stafford-Clark, David Farr, Bonnie Greer, Adam Rapp, Sam Shepherd and Eric Schossler. It has also established strong links with touring companies such as Out of Joint, Oxford Stage Company and Tiata Fahodzi.
