Covent Garden’s Theatre Museum has been granted a stay of execution by the trustees of the Victoria and Albert Museum after the board decided to further investigate proposals resulting from recent consultations with the theatrical community.
These include a plan by the Royal Opera House to help develop the site in partnership with the Theatre Museum, V&A and other industry bodies such as the Society of London Theatre and the National Theatre. According to the V&A, it is now one of “a number of proposals” under consideration.
A statement from the trustees added: “The V&A will now explore these options in greater detail and report back to the trustees. The V&A is still in discussion with the ROH about a partnership. This would enable the ROH to use the Theatre Museum site to extend its educational activities and events and allow the Theatre Museum to continue to stage displays and educational activities in Covent Garden.”
It is expected that a final decision on the future of the site, which has been under threat following two failed bids for Heritage Lottery Funds, will be made this autumn.
