Radio 1 scoops Sony station of the year award

Published Tuesday 9 May 2006 at 11:20 by Liz Thomas

Radio 1 has been named radio station of the year at the Sony Radio Academy Awards, for the first time in the event’s history.

Breakfast host Chris Moyles won the entertainment award while Zane Lowe picked up accolades for specialist music programme and music broadcaster of the year.

Chris Evans’ comeback into mainstream radio was underlined after he was named music radio personality of the year, despite the fact that his move to take over Johnnie Walker’s drivetime slot on Radio 2 was marred by complaints from more than 1,000 listeners.

Colleague Terry Wogan was honoured with an outstanding achievement award, while Radio 4 picked up seven accolades at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane.

LBC host Nick Ferrari won the breakfast show award and Magic 105.4’s Richard Park was named station programmer of the year.
