Hackney Empire New Act of the Year 2004 awarded

Published Tuesday 16 March 2004 at 11:10 by Sally Bramley

Canadian comedian Peter Aterman has been crowned The Hackney Empire New Act of the Year 2004, after winning the judges’ praise for his originality in his monologue based on an Italian tour guide.

Aterman beat runner-up Kerry Godliman and jointly third-placed Drew Cameron and Ava Videl to take the title, which has helped launched the careers of Ardal O’Hanlon, Jo Brand and Ronnie Ancona.

Producer Claire Muldoon said it had been terrific to have the competition, compered by Stage contributor Arthur Smith, back in the newly restored Hackney Empire.
