Magic Maniacs, which will also feature Dirty Tricks magicians Alistair Cook and Pete Firman, is to be made by Objective Productions and is still at the pilot stage but if it proves a success it could herald the return of the genre to mainstream television.

While illusion has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years with both Channel 4 and Five commissioning series, the last primetime weekend magic series on BBC1 or ITV was the Paul Daniels Show more than a decade ago.

Magic Circle vice-president and TV consultant Ali Bongo said: “I think magic is due for a mainstream comeback - in the same way that dancing and variety are enjoying one.”
