Argentinian newcomer to play Evita

Andrew Lloyd Webber this week unveiled an unknown Argentinian actress as the new Eva Peron in the revival of his musical Evita.

Elena Roger, who has appeared in musicals in her home country, will be the first Argentinian to play the role and will make her UK debut when the show comes to the Adelphi Theatre in June.

It will be directed by award-winning director Michael Grandage, as revealed last year by The Stage. Grandage said he would be approaching the production from a completely different perspective to the 1978 version, now that much more was known about Argentina.

He said: “We now have access to a country that we didn’t have last time round. There will be the introduction of some tango, if not some tap. But I don’t want to short change people with something completely new. I hope we’ll pay due homage to the great iconic moments and keep them in.”

Lloyd Webber said he would be updating some of the show’s orchestration but would not be writing any new music for the production.
