Tory MP demands inquiry into ENO crisis

Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Hugo Swire has called for an inquiry into the recent “debacle” at the English National Opera, following Martin Smith’s resignation as chairman of the organisation.

Smith announced his decision to leave after widespread criticism of his leadership and the threat of strike action from company staff. Swire has now written a letter to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Tessa Jowell, demanding an investigation into the events leading up to Smith’s departure.

In the letter, the Tory MP commented: “Though I fully support the ENO in its purpose and aims, there is clearly a perceived crisis of confidence in the management. We cannot allow any organisation which receives (as it did last year) £16 million of annual subsidy from the taxpayer to be immune from proper scrutiny.

“The debacle at ENO cannot be ignored by government. I hope your inquiry will begin soon and make its findings and recommendations publicly available.”

Following Smith’s resignation, Vernon Ellis, currently vice-chairman, will take the role on a temporary basis, while the board searches for a replacement in the new year.

The company has endured constant difficulties since the resignation of its former general director Nicholas Payne in 2002. He was replaced as artistic director and chief executive by Sean Doran, the former head of the Perth International Arts Festival in Australia, who came to the post with no previous experience of running a theatre or opera house. He stepped down from his position in November.

Earlier this month, technical and front of house staff announced that they would be balloting over industrial action, having decided almost unanimously to reject a 2.77% pay offer following months of wrangling with managers. If a ‘yes’ vote is returned, some 170 staff could walk out in January, bringing the company to a standstill.
