Simon Russell Beale completed his hat trick of prizes at this year’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards, while the Royal Court was honoured with a special award for its contribution to British theatre.
Russell Beale has won on two previous occasions at the awards, which were held for the 51st time this year at the Savoy on November 28. The Royal Court, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2006 was recognised for its contribution to new writing over that half-century.
The Donmar Warehouse also enjoyed a successful year, picking up wins in three out of eight categories. Meanwhile, commercial theatre recorded an impressive tally, scooping six awards. However, the National Theatre, which has recently dominated the prizes, failed to secure a single win.
The judging panel included Nicholas de Jongh from the Evening Standard, Benedict Nightingale from The Times, Susannah Clapp from The Observer, Georgina Brown from the Mail on Sunday, Charles Spencer from The Daily Telegraph, and Alastair Macaulay from the Financial Times.
