Increased performances and audience numbers together with a 71% increase in income from sponsorship and donations gave English National Opera a 12% boost in total income to just over £40 million in the year to the end of March.
ENO gave 132 performances – 17 more than in 2011-12 – of 11 new productions (three of which were by living composers) and five revivals at its London Coliseum home and saw audiences growing 9% to 205,000, of which 29,000 were first-time bookers. Box office receipts enjoyed an 18% boost to £9.7 million, with sponsorship money growing from £3.5 million to £6 million year on year.
With £4.2 million raised through the new ENO Create programme and Arts Council England’s Catalyst scheme, an overall surplus of £2.7 million was reported, compared to a deficit of £2.2 million the previous year.
A transfer of funds from funds reduced the trading deficit to £780,000, a better than forecast reduction of two-thirds on the previous year.
The 2012/13 season also saw the appointment of Ryan Wigglesworth as composer in residence and collaborations with 15 partners from 12 countries. More than 80% of performers employed by the company were British or trained in Britain, including seven conductors.
Five productions broadcast on Radio 3 reached a combined audience of 1.1 million listeners, with a further 200,000 attending the 107 performances at the Coliseum by guest companies that included English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Cape Town Opera.
