Southwark Playhouse’s Titanic wins big at Off West End Theatre Awards

Southwark Playhouse’s presentation of a new chamber version of musical Titanic has won the most prizes at this year’s Off West End Theatre Awards, including best musical production.

The revival, which ran last summer and was produced by Danielle Tarento, received four gongs overall.

Cressida Carre picked up the best choreography prize for her work on the musical, and the show received nods in the best costume designer category - with David Woodhead winning here - and in the lighting design section, with Howard Hudson taking the prize. Both Woodhead and Hudson won for their work on the Arcola Theatre’s production of Lizzie Siddal as well.

At a ceremony held this evening at the Unicorn Theatre, Phoebe Waller-Bridge took home the prizes for both best female performance and most promising new playwright for her one-woman show Fleabag, which ran at the Soho Theatre.

The awards, which are known as the Offies and recognise the work of independent theatre in London, saw Jamie Samuel win best male performance for Jumpers for Goalposts at the Bush Theatre.

Venues with double wins included the Gate Theatre, which scooped the best production and set design awards for Grounded, which was designed by Oliver Townsend. The Union Theatre also took two prizes with Michael Strassen named best director for musical Billy and artistic director Sasha Regan winning in the best producer category – a group in which she was the only nominee.

Meanwhile, best new play went to The Match Box by Frank McGuiness, which transferred to the Tricycle Theatre from Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, and Glasgow Girls at Theatre Royal Stratford East won the best new musical prize.

This year’s winners will for the first time be paired with an industry expert who will provide advice and guidance on their next career steps. Figures taking part this year include incoming National Theatre director Rufus Norris, Young Vic artistic director David Lan, producer Sonia Friedman and director Natalie Abrahami.

  1. We saw ‘Titanic the Musical’ performed by amateurs a few years ago, and thought it was a good musical, but that the main problem was the title – dumping ‘The Musical’ part of the title would no doubt give it a bit more gravitas.

  2. When is a short list not a short list?
    When it’s an Offie. I hope the patrons and sponsors are happy supporting the fact that so many shows on the short list were not on the long list it was a very sad night for a lot of shows
