Broadway musical Kinky Boots will be staged in the UK in 2015, its director has revealed.

Jerry Mitchell, who is currently working on the musical version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and who has previously helmed shows such as Legally Blonde in the UK, told The Stage that Kinky Boots would be produced in the UK next year and that four potential theatres are currently being lined up for its UK run.

“It’s definitely coming,” Mitchell said, adding: “The question is when and that relies on theatres [being available]. We have been offered four different theatres, but they all currently have shows in them. So until any of them close, or announce they are closing, we won’t know for sure.”

Mitchell said the plan was to bring the musical, which he directed and choreographed on Broadway, here in either the spring or autumn of 2015.

The show, based on the film of the same name, has music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein.

Mitchell is currently directing a production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels for the West End. It will open at the Savoy Theatre in March.

He said that he was surprised that the musical, which ran on Broadway in 2005, had never been performed in the West End.

“I think the story is much more European,” he said, adding: “It’s about a guy in the south of France who is a con artist, and he is befriended by another con artist. I thought it would be a perfect show [for the UK].”
