Southwark Playhouse announces opening shows at new venue

Southwark Playhouse will open its first season at its new site in Elephant and Castle with a revival of Claire Luckham’s 1980 play Trafford Tanzi.

Re-titled Tanzi Libre, the play will be led by the London venue’s former artistic director Ellie Jones.

It will run in the theatre’s main 240-seat space – called the Large - at its new building on Newington Causeway from May 15 May to June 22.

The venue has also launched a free ticket scheme for the production, which will allow 1,000 local residents to see Tanzi Libre without charge.

All Southwark residents will be able to apply for up to two tickets per household by booking over the phone.

Meanwhile, in the 120-seat studio, Juana in a Million will receive its London premiere.

Directed by Nir Paldi and written and performed by Vicky Araico Casas, with live music by Adam Pleeth, the show will run from May 22 to June 15.

Southwark Playhouse has moved to the converted office and warehouse space at Elephant and Castle while its London Bridge venue undergoes redevelopment.

It has been provided with space in the London Bridge station redevelopment, but will not be able to return until the project is completed in 2018.
