Former EastEnders actor Sid Owen is to make his musical theatre debut in a new sixties-themed production called Carnaby Street.

The show has been written by music agent Carl Leighton-Pope and will also star Verity Rushworth, whose credits include Hairspray in the West End and the tour of The Sound of Music.

Carnaby Street, which will open at the Hackney Empire in April, will feature songs such as You Really Got Me and Let’s Spend the Night Together.

To coincide with the show’s opening, Universal Music will release an album featuring original tracks of music used in the show.

In addition, a pop-up shop selling merchandise associated with the production will open on Carnaby Street.

Leighton-Pope, who has been writing the musical for a decade, said: “I was 18 in 1964 and all the characters in this musical are people I met at that time. Carnaby Street was somewhere everyone went on a Saturday to hang out with other mods and the rock stars of the day. It was a time of great optimism and the Carnaby Street musical truly represents this life-changing era.”

The musical is being directed by Bob Tomson, whose West End credits include Blood Brothers and Dreamboats and Petticoats.

It will be designed by Matthew Wright and will run at the Hackney Empire from April 6 to 14, before embarking on a UK tour.

The show will play at venues including the Manchester Opera House and the Bournemouth Pavilion. It is currently scheduled to run until the end of June.

The show is produced by Carnaby Street Promotions Ltd in association with the Hackney Empire.
