A campaign to tackle late payments to Equity members working as freelancers has been proposed at the union’s Annual Representative Conference.
Peter Rylands, chair of the north Lancashire and Cumbria general branch, put forward a motion asking for the campaign to raise awareness about the contractual rights of freelancers and the timeframes within which payments should be expected.
He said: “The issue here is simple. Work is increasingly harder to obtain but when compounded by late and non payment of freelance fees, this can lead to severe financial hardship.”
The motion suggested that the campaign should include the production of advice leaflets, talks by organisers at branch meetings and promotion of a strapline on invoices stating that payments be made within 28 days.
The motion was passed unanimously.
