Matthew Bourne’s production of Sleeping Beauty has become the most successful show produced by his company New Adventures.
Sleeping Beauty ran at Sadler’s Wells over Christmas for 64 performances, and the company said these were to “full capacity audiences”. It said more than 97,000 people saw the show, adding that this made it the “most successful” production both in New Adventures’ history and to be staged at Sadler’s Wells.
Sleeping Beauty will now tour the US from September this year, playing two weeks in Cleveland, New York and Los Angeles. It will also run for a week in Washington DC.
In addition, the production and its original cast will be filmed at the Bristol Hippodrome next month for broadcast on television over Christmas and a DVD release. The company could not confirm which broadcaster is planning to transmit the programme, which is being directed by Ross MacGibbon.
Bourne said: “Sleeping Beauty was created as a centre piece of a year long celebration of 25 years of my company, and its quality and popularity is testament to everyone who makes New Adventures what it is today.”
He added: “I’m grateful to our touring venues and audiences, who have embraced this piece like no other, making it our most successful production yet.”
