Nottingham’s Theatre Royal is a stunning historic theatre, by two great theatre architects, Phipps and Matcham, and this year continued its long history of providing first-rate entertainment in its variety of presentations.

There has been something for everyone: for my part highlights have been dramas such as ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’, ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore’ and the visits of Opera North with their eclectic and stimulatingly varied programme of ‘traditional’ and modern opera.

Colleagues and friends have also spoken enthusiastically of musicals and other drama productions.

The variety is one of the great attractions of the Theatre Royal, and it is be hoped that what attracts younger audiences to the Theatre will develop into life-long interest and attendance both at the Theatre Royal and at other theatres both nationally and internationally. We need to start the habit of theatre-going young and to find ways to sustain this throughout life, and I think that the variety provided by the Theatre Royal is going a great way towards this.

For me, personally, I would like to see some more drama, and perhaps this will come along in future seasons.

The Theatre Royal was my introduction to local, national and international theatre-going since I was a very small girl,70 years ago, and the anticipation on entering this lovely building (stunningly redecorated externally just over a year ago) remains with me.
