Maria Miller succeeds Hunt as culture secretary

Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke and minister for disabled people, has been appointed as the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, succeeding Jeremy Hunt.

Hunt was promoted to become Secretary of State for Health in the government reshuffle today. Miller will also become minister for women and equalities, held jointly with her brief as culture secretary.

Miller is a former advertising executive – having served as director of global advertising and marketing agency Greys Global Group. She was first elected to the House of Commons in 2005 as MP for Basingstoke. This will be her first cabinet post.

So far no announcement has been made on whether the reshuffle will affect more junior ministers within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
