Aisling Bea wins comedy newcomers award

Irish comedian Aisling Bea has been announced as the winner of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s stand-up comedy competition, Foster’s So You Think You’re Funny? Award.

She was one of eight comedians shortlisted for the newcomers award, which was judged by a panel including comedian Ruby Wax, and wins a cash prize and opportunity to perform at Montreal’s comedy festival, Just For Laughs.

Second place was awarded to Jonathan Pelham, while Murdo Haggs and Wayne Mazadza took joint third.

In the past, comedians Lee Mack and Peter Kay have both been recipients of the award.

The judging panel this year included artistic director of Edinburgh venue Gilded Balloon Karen Koren, A&R director of Universal, Angela Robertson, director of Melbourne International Comedy Festival Susan Provan, Sunday Times’ culture editor Helen Hawkins and comedy festival Just For Laughs’ talent producer Zoe Rabnett.
