Russian Uncle Vanya comes to Noel Coward Theatre

Natalie Woolman

Russian theatre company Vakhtangov is to stage its production of Uncle Vanya in the West End this autumn.

The play is directed by Rimas Tuminas and won the best production prize at the Russian Golden Mask Awards. It will play the Noel Coward Theatre from November 5 to 10 and be performed in Russian with English surtitles.

The staging on Uncle Vanya follows the presentation of three plays by Moscow’s Souvremennik Theatre in 2011. Vakhtangov is being produced in London by Oksana Nemchuk and Artsbridge Ltd.

Nemchuk also worked on the Sovremennik season. She commented: “I now understand the importance of bringing these unique and previously unseen Russian theatre productions to the West End. I hope this return to the Noël Coward will mark the beginning of a regular Russian theatre season in London”.
