An opera about Walt Disney written by Philip Glass forms part of English National Opera’s new season.
The Perfect American is based on Peter Stephan Jungk’s novel Der Konig von Amerika and is described as a “partly fictionalised account of the final years of Walt Disney’s life”.
It opens on June 1, 2013 and will see Christopher Purves play Disney, with Ben Wright choreographing the show.
Other works included in ENO’s 2012/13 season include Sunken Garden, composed by Michel van der Aa, with a libretto by David Mitchell, who penned the book Cloud Atlas. This production opens at the Barbican on April 12 next year and will combine film with live performance to “create a unique staging of this tale of crime, hoax and dark truth”.
Meanwhile, Rupert Goold will direct a new production of Wozzeck, the first time the opera has been performed by ENO in 20 years.
The production will be conducted by Edward Gardner and opens on May 11, 2013.
ENO will also revive its production of Death in Venice by Benjamin Britten, directed by Deborah Warner, and stage Don Giovanni, directed by Rufus Norris.
