Michael Attenborough, the artistic director of the Almeida Theatre, is to be presented with the Award for Excellence in International Theatre later today.

The awarding body is the International Theatre Institute, which is a worldwide network that aims to promote the sharing of knowledge and practice in the theatre.

Attenborough said: “I am honoured and flattered to be given this prestigious award from such a distinguished and hugely respected organisation, particularly when previous winners have included directors such as Peter Brook and Michael Grandage and the panel contains many admired theatre practitioners.”

Neville Shulman, director of the British Centre of the International Theatre Institute, will present Attenborough with the award at the Travellers Club in London later today.
