Sylvia Young Theatre School moves into new home

Sylvia Young Theatre School has completed its move into new London premises a year later than originally planned.

The new location gives it four times as much space and allows it to increase the number of students it enrols.

The new site, a converted church, is based in Nutford Place just off the Edgware Road. It boasts ten dance studios and 11 classrooms, compared with the three dance studios and seven classrooms in its old premises in Rossmore Road.

In total, the church measures 40,000 square feet, compared with Rossmore Road’s 9,000 square feet.

Young told The Stage that the move was completed just three weeks ago, in time for the summer school and that full-time students will benefit from the new location when term starts again in September. This will see a total of 230 students attending the school, compared with 200 in the old premises last September.

However, Young explained that last year’s intake represented an increase from 150 in 2008, and revealed that the 2009 increase had occurred because the school had anticipated moving into new premises a year ago.

“We thought we were going to move in last September so we increased the intake then, and ended up having to squeeze them all in to the old school,” she said.

Young added: “We have increased the number this year by another 30, but have left a bit of space in each year. That is what I wanted, because if I filled them all I would have to move again.”

Young admitted that the process of moving had been “heavy going”, but described the end result as “fabulous”.

She said each dance studio had Maple sprung floors, adding that the school combined the original features of the old church with a modern interior. The larger building also means the school has been able to increase numbers of youngsters attending Saturday classes.
