Malcolm Sinclair elected Equity president

Malcolm Sinclair has been named the new president of Equity.

The actor, currently appearing at the National Theatre in The Habit of Art, won 1,799 of the votes, beating Graham Hamilton, who took 1,593 votes, and Dave Eager, who received 522 votes.

In total, 35,561 Equity members were able to vote in the elections, with 4,269 actually voting. This represents 12% of the union’s total membership.

This year more than 130 Equity members put themselves forward for election to the union’s council, which represented a 33% increase compared with 2008.

Significantly, a large percentage of young members stood for election, with all nine of the union’s Young Members’ Committee, which was formed last year to give young members a voice in the running of Equity, standing.

Of these, Ellie Paskell, Ryan Forde Iosco, who is 22 and chairman of the Young Members’ Committee, Sanita Simms, who stood for the minority ethnic artists seat, and Laura Bailey were elected.

Meanwhile, high-profile actors Samuel West and Peter Polycarpou have been elected to council, while Tony Robinson has been elected to the appeals committee..
