Victoria Wood is to lead the cast of a new BBC2 drama about comedy duo Morecambe and Wise.
The as yet untitled project is being written by Peter Bowker and made by production company Blue Door Adventures and BBC Wales Drama Production.
It focuses on the relationship the pair had with Morecambe’s mother, Sadie, who will be played by Wood.
The drama was announced today by BBC2 controller Janice Hadlow, who also unveiled a new adaptation of Michel Faber’s novel, The Crimson Petal and the White.
Adapted by playwright and screenwriter Lucinda Coxon, it is being directed by Marc Munden, whose credits include The Devil’s Whore and The Mark Of Cain.
Hadlow described the drama as “a riveting tale of life in the world of Victorian prostitution” and said it was “packed with detail and texture in a way that has never been attempted before”.
She added: “Strongly authored dramas, whether adaptation or original writing, are absolutely key to the creation of BBC2′s confident new voice and these two dramas are excellent examples of the new direction we are moving in.”
Meanwhile, Hadlow also revealed today that Matt Smith, currently starring in Doctor Who, is to play the author Christopher Isherwood in a 90-minute drama called Christopher and His Kind.
