The National Theatre has appointed Penguin Group chief executive John Makinson as the new chairman of its board.
Makinson, who is also chair of trustees for the think tank Institute for Public Policy Research and was created a CBE in 2001, joined the National Theatre’s board in July 2008. He will succeed Hayden Phillips and the appointment will be effective as of November 1.
Makinson commented: “The National Theatre is admired for the outstanding quality of its work by theatre-lovers all over the world. Its creative reputation has never been higher. But the great Lasdun building on the South Bank houses many other strengths. The NT is consistently innovative, commercially acute and well run. It will be a genuine privilege, as well as a personal pleasure, to work with Nick Hytner and his team as we build on those strengths in 2011 and beyond.”
