Olivier Awards to be shown live online

Viewers will be able to watch this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards live on the internet, marking the first time the ceremony has been shown as and when it happens.

The live streaming of the event, which will take place on March 21 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, will be available at www.oliverawards.co.uk.

Philippa Salvoni, head of publishing at the Society of London Theatre, which organises the awards, said: “This is a very exciting development for both the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Society of London Theatre. We are delighted that visitors to our website will be able to enjoy the atmosphere and glamour of this prestigious event.”

SOLT also confirmed revealed today that the host of the 34th Laurence Olivier Awards would be actor Anthony Head, who is currently appearing in Six Degrees of Separation at the Old Vic.

Meanwhile, online voting is now in the final stages for the Audience Award for Most Popular Show, a new category for 2010.

It is the only category voted for entirely by the public. The five shows on the shortlist are Billy Elliot the Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, War Horse, We Will Rock You and Wicked.

Audience members can vote at www.olivierawards.co.uk.
