Eccleston to play Lennon in BBC4 drama

Christopher Eccleston is to star as John Lennon in a new BBC4 drama.

Lennon Naked, made by Blast! Films, looks at Lennon’s life following the death of The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein in 1967.

The BBC said the film “focuses on the turbulent and intense period of change that followed”.

BBC drama commissioning controller Ben Stephenson said: “Securing Christopher Eccleston to play John Lennon is further testament to the calibre of drama on BBC4.”

The film also charts Lennon’s relationship with Yoko Ono and the reasons why Lennon abandoned the UK to start a new life in America.

Other cast members include Rory Kinnear as Epstein and Andrew Scott as Paul McCartney.

Lennon Naked has been written by Robert Jones, whose credits include The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, and will air in 2010.
