Former BBC Wales drama head Julie Gardner has been appointed an executive producer at BBC Worldwide America.
She is the first hire announced by former BBC controller of fiction Jane Tranter, who joined BBC Worldwide America at the beginning of the year as executive vice president of programming and production.
In her new role with the BBC’s commercial arm, Gardner, who headed up the revival of Doctor Who during her time at BBC Wales, will be responsible for scripted projects and will start in June this year.
She will work with US writers in addition to UK creative talent, including Russell T Davies and Life on Mars creators Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharaoh.
Tranter described Gardner as a “remarkable talent” and added: “She brings an unprecedented insight into drama development and production and has a solid track record of forging strong relationships with the creative community. She will be an asset to our already talented team of scripted executives.”
Gardner first joined the BBC in 2000 where she worked as a script editor and producer. She went on to work for London Weekend Television before returning to the BBC in 2003 as head of drama at BBC Wales.
