BBC2 to air new ‘dark character comedy’ by League of Gentlemen duo

The League of Gentlemen’s Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton have created a new character comedy for BBC2 which will star Dawn French, Eileen Atkins and Christopher Biggins.

Psychoville is described by the BBC as a “dark character comedy mystery featuring the weird and wonderful”.

Its characters include a blind Beanie collector, a dwarf who is in love with his panto Snow White and a one-handed clown who makes balloon animals with his hook.

All the people in the village have been sent a card marked with the words ‘I know what you did’.

Pemberton and Shearsmith will also star in the series, and other cast members include Debbie Chazen and Adrian Scarborough.

It is directed by Matt Lipsey and was commissioned by outgoing BBC2 controller Roly Keating and comedy commissioner Lucy Lumsden.

Keating said: “BBC2′s The League of Gentlemen became one of the channel’s most talked about and idiosyncratic television comedies of recent years, so we’re very happy indeed to welcome back Reece and Steve with their latest creation.”

Psychoville starts filming in mid-October and will be broadcast next year.
