Actress Carole Lynne, who married the entertainment mogul Lord Bernard Delfont, has died at the age of 89.
In the forties and fifties Lynne was one of the West End’s most glamorous leading ladies appearing in a host of revues and musical comedies. She was also a renowned principal boy in pantomime and starred at the London Palladium many times.
Her first husband was the screen actor Derek Farr, but after they divorced she married Ukraine-born Bernard Delfont in 1946. The brother of agents Lew and Leslie Grade, Delfont was then an up and coming variety impresario.
By the sixties, he and his brothers were the most powerful entertainment agents and impresarios in Britain.
Delfont was knighted in 1974 and created a life peer as Baron Delfont of Stepney in 1976.
Lady Delfont later retired from acting but remained closely involved with many leading theatrical charities notably The Entertainment Artistes Benevolent Fund. She made her last television appearance in 1994, when she and her husband were special guests on Pat Kirkwood’s This Is Your Life.
She died at her home in Sussex on January 17, 2008. A full obituary will appear in a future issue of The Stage.
