Ayckbourn back to work after stroke

Nuala Calvi

Alan Ayckbourn is to return to his role of artistic director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre this September, following his absence after suffering a stroke.

Ayckbourn will direct his new play If I Were You, the tale of a couple and their secret lives, written before he fell ill in February.

Commenting on his comeback, Ayckbourn said he was “thrilled to be home” at the theatre again and was looking forward to getting started on rehearsals.

The production opens on October 12 and stars Liza Goddard, John Branwell, Andrew Brooke, Saskia Butler and David Hartley.
