I didn't have the best of times watching a new musical version of A Tale of Two Cities, but I also didn't have the worst. Perhaps this Dickens story is simply not one that can't be musicalised. Previous attempts, including a short-lived Broadway edition in 2008 and a Howard Goodall-scored British one at Salisbury Playhouse two years before that, didn't work either, so perhaps the effort of distilling 45 chapters into a workable musical is doomed to failure...
