August Strindberg's taut dissection of class warfare and sexual politics is rendered faithfully in this handsome Royal Exchange revival. And while adapter David Eldridge and director Sarah Frankcom remain faithful to the author's naturalistic tone and world vision, designer Max Jones makes sure that Strindberg's late 19th-century below-stairs world is fully realised on stage, right down to the grass between the flagstones, with Steve Brown's sound completing the allusion of a servant's ball going on upstairs...
