Artifact was the first ballet created by William Forsythe when he became artistic director of Frankfurt Ballet in 1984, and it has been performed regularly by different companies ever since. This ballet in four parts opens with Character in Historical Costume (Kate Strong) and Character with Megaphone (Nicholas Champion) shouting, often unintelligibly, about remembering and forgetting while the dancers form immaculate lines and patterns largely at the side of the stage. Eva Crossman-Hecht's music for this and part four is so repetitive that I felt sorry for the pianist, Margot Kazimirska, who had to play the same eight notes over and over again...
