As a study in a woman's pain, this revival of De Filippo's 1945 play is at times deeply affecting. Samantha Spiro plays the titular lead, a woman who has raised herself from the gutters of Neapolitan whoredom to become the long-term mistress of the wealthy racehorse owner Domenico. Only she has three secret sons from her past which she wants to legitimise and at the start of the play cons her lover into thinking she is dying in order to compel him to marry her...
