Eugene O'Neill's earliest plays are brief snapshots in the lives of merchant seamen a century ago, marked by a realism and sense of fate characteristic of the naturalism of the period. In Bound East for Cardiff, a dying sailor mixes memories of good times with an awareness of all the ordinary things he never had in his life. In the Zone shows a frightened wartime crew convincing themselves that one of their shipmates is a saboteur, and The Long Voyage Home watches a veteran sailor plan on leaving the sea for a farm, only to be shanghaied back onto what is likely to be his final voyage...
