Beauty and the Beast is a romantic, character-driven tale that lends itself less easily to pantomime conventions than some of the more popular titles. Millfield's production is energetic and colourful, but a little short on plot and character. Freya Hurcomb makes a charming debut as Beauty but her relationship with Aston Dobson's gruff, slightly petulant Beast has little room to blossom. While David Anthony is touching as Beauty's father, injecting real pathos into his guilt at abandoning his daughter to the Beast, evil Witch Heather (Manal El-Feitury) is more of a linking device than a true villain and handsome, shallow Gaston Le Vain (Adrian Quinton) has little to play with...
