One of the great joys of the British stage is its sense of family and continuity, in which the theatrical torch is regularly handed from one generation to the next. This has been movingly embodied by father-and-son Timothy and Samuel West, for instance, once playing father-and-son(s), both biological and cloned, in Caryl Churchill's A Number. Reverberating echoes have also been regularly created by the Redgrave dynasty, where Vanessa, Lynn and their brother Corin's daughter Jemma once played Chekhov's Three Sisters in the West End - now, Vanessa's younger daughter Joely Richardson follows where both her mother and late sister Natasha once led in playing Ellida Wangel in Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea...
