The genius of this Citizen's production begins in Alan McHugh's script, which takes fragments of pantomime - songs, the wicked stepmother, a simple plot - and marries them to a far more sophisticated narrative. There is even a hint of the power of stories to define reality, alongside the familiar melodrama of Hansel and Gretel's battle against the seductive witch. That the children in the audience are moved to politely applaud the final victory and reunion of the family is testament to the show's ability to introduce serious performance to a young crowd...
