Director Racky Plews has taken on board a huge, extremely popular Broadway show that comes with heaps of baggage, from the star casting of the hit movie to the recent and commercially successful revivals in the West End. Plews, however, embraces the restrictions in size and budget, creating an individualistic view of the underbelly of Broadway. The traverse staging and Howard Hudson's subdued lighting design invoke a darker, more dangerous Broadway where guys will do anything for a fast buck and dolls schlep in seedy burlesque while dreaming of married bliss far away from the urban sleaze...
